Skoda will feature more recycled materials for its future models says firm’s design expert

The brand began fitting sustainable materials into its first EV, the Enyaq, but the new Elroq bucks that trend further with eco-conscious materials.

Skoda will focus on developing recycled and sustainable materials used throughout its interior for its future models.

In keeping with decarbonisation, the firm is set to release more EVs by the end of the decade and aims to be a carbon-neutral manufacturer by 2030.

Vehicle production can play a big part in a car’s overall emission cycle, but Skoda is trying to cut down on its CO2 by producing its interiors with recyclable and sustainable parts. The new Elroq plays a key part in the firm’s decarbonisation strategy and includes two new materials in the car’s cabin.

The new Elroq’s interior features materials such as Technofill and Recytitan. (Skoda)

The PA news agency spoke to Stefan Webelhorst, Skoda’s colour, design and trim expert, he said: “For all of our models with the Superb, Kodiaq and now the Elroq we now use recycled polyester for interior fabrics and for the new Elroq we are using two new materials. One of which is the ‘Technofill’ which is recycled polyamide.

“It’s a new material group that we tend to use. We also have the mechanical recycled fabric Recytitan, which is also another source of recycled material. The next step is to bring even further plastic parts that incorporate more recycled materials. Also, the plan would be from a colour and trim point of view to have only recycled fabrics because technology-wise, we are able to provide surfaces that look and have the same value that non-recycled materials do, but it has the advantage of having a more sustainable car.”

Skoda’s new Elroq will start from £31,500 and will be an electric alternative to its popular combustion-powered Karoq SUV with deliveries expected to take place at the beginning of next year.

First drive: Skoda’s new Elroq bolsters this brand’s EV offering

The second electric model in Skoda’s product portfolio aims to take on the Volvo EX30 and Peugeot e-3008. Cameron Richards reports.

What is it?

(Skoda)

Electric SUVs are the norm in the modern car world. There’s barely a week which goes by without another car manufacturer releasing another new model into this already flooded market, and the latest to do so is, Skoda.

Skoda has come on leaps and bounds over the years, and the latest offerings are by far its best yet.

The new Elroq SUV joins the firm’s lineup as the brand’s newest electric model to sit beneath the larger Enyaq in the range.

The Elroq will be going up against cars like the Volvo EX30 and Peugeot e-300. But can it come out on top? We’ve been finding out.

What’s new?

(Skoda)

The Elroq is a completely new model to join the Skoda portfolio, sitting on the Volkswagen Group’s electric MEB platform.

The batteries for the car are positioned low under the car, allowing for a completely flat floor which helps with space inside for occupants.

Compared to the larger Enyaq, the Elroq is around 160mm shorter than its bigger brother and it’s the first EV from the firm to use the ‘Modern Solid’ design language. But, what’s it like overall? We’ve been finding out.

What’s under the bonnet?

(Skoda)

Skoda offers the new Elroq with a choice of three different battery packs that are labelled ‘50’, ‘60’ and ‘85’.

We’re driving the more powerful ‘85’ model that utilises a 77kWh battery pack with an electric motor located on the rear axle. It gives out a total of 282bhp and 545Nm of torque, while acceleration is brisk, taking just 6.4 seconds to get from 0-60mph before topping out at 111mph. Skoda claims that this version can do a total distance of up to 360 miles.

It also comes as standard with DC rapid charging of speeds of up to 175kW, taking 28 minutes to receive a 10 to 80 per cent top-up.

What’s it like to drive?

As with lots of electric cars, the Elroq is quiet wherever it goes. We’re driving the more powerful 85 model that comes with a 77kWh battery pack and electric motor, which is very smooth under acceleration and is relatively pokey.

Its refinement is excellent, with only the faintest bit of tyre roar entering the cabin on the motorway. The steering input is a little vague but has a nice weight to it and doesn’t feel artificial. The Elroq corners well with limited body lean around the bends and there is sufficient grip, too.

What lets the car down is the ride, which feels unsettled and fidgety. That’s largely down to our test car’s larger 20-inch alloy wheels. But, visibility is good all around with large rear windows, with the only gripe being the thicker rear C-pillars.

The Elroq’s driving experience is particularly relaxing and smooth, if a little anonymous, but for everyday use, it’s a rather composed and capable EV.

How does it look?

(Skoda)

Skodas have always carried a distinct identity and the new Elroq is the first car in the model line-up to utilise the brand’s new design language it calls ‘Modern Solid’ for its electric vehicles.

It essentially means that the front end is smoothed off with no radiator grille and there is brand-specific lettering for the badge positioned at the front of the bonnet.

The Elroq looks rather like an Enyaq that has been on a diet, but that doesn’t mean the car is unattractive.

What’s it like inside?

(Skoda)

Inside, the Elroq’s cabin design is rather plush with lots of soft-touch materials dotted about the place. A sustainable element is applied throughout the cabin with a material called ‘TechnoFil’, which is composed of 75 per cent recycled Econyl (a type of recycled nylon) and 25 per cent polyester. The seat upholstery is made from recycled fish nets, too, but don’t worry – it’s all been cleaned intensively first.

There’s a leather effect on the dashboard and our Sportline test car has carbon fibre inlays on the door cards and above the glove box lid.

There is a five-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 13-inch central touchscreen which is slick and easy to use, but the touch sensitive volume bar and the fact that a lot of the climate control settings are buried within the screen is still an issue for a lot of models that are owned by the Volkswagen Group.

As with all Skoda vehicles, you’ll find plenty of ‘Simply Clever’ features inside the Elroq. There is a handy parking ticket holder located on the front windscreen, an umbrella in the driver’s door and an ice scraper in the rear boot lid.

Space in the back is impressive with lots of head and legroom for even taller adults. Thanks to the completely flat floor, passengers will find they can sit comfortably, as well as being able to slide their feet under the front seats.

The Elroq’s boot capacity is one of the largest in its class, boasting a total capacity of up to 470 litres of space, or 1,580 litres with the rear seats folded. A handy ski hatch also allows longer items to be stowed through the seats and for an added option, you can have a charging cable net secured to the parcel shelf.

What’s the spec like?

(Skoda)

Skoda will offer the Elroq with a choice of four different trim levels including SE, SE L, Edition and Sportline.

The range kicks off at £31,500, making it cheaper than its rivals like a Peugeot e-3008 and Volvo EX30.

Entry-level SE cars come with 19-inch alloy wheels, LED head and tailights, the 13-inch infotainment screen that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as ChatGPT.

We’re driving the flagship Sportline model, which comes in at £37,400 with the smaller 62kWh battery pack, or £41,600 for the larger 82kWh unit. It focuses more on a sportier exterior and interior with 20-inch alloy wheels, gloss black exterior detailing, sports front bucket seats and a perforated leather steering wheel that is heated, too.

Verdict

Skoda will certainly succeed with its new Elroq. Not only does it undercut some of its biggest rivals on price, but it’s also decent to drive while offering lots of space and handy interior storage solutions with a premium interior with recycled materials.

It offers a wide number of battery options, with decent electric ranges on all versions and it even looks rather handsome in any colour or specification. If you’re looking for a mid-size electric SUV, the Elroq certainly should have a place on your shortlist.

First drive: Vauxhall revives the Frontera name with new electric SUV

This latest model will be sitting on Stellantis’ ‘Smart Car’ Platform, and is completely different to the old Frontera. Cameron Richards reports.

What is it?

(Vauxhall)

The Frontera nameplate hasn’t been used on a Vauxhall since the original car went out of production way back in 2004. Since then, the company has focused on its practical family MPVs and SUVs.

Now that the demand for SUVs has risen even more, and the electric revolution is starting to take shape, Vauxhall has decided to bring back one of its household names and put it on its latest offering to rival the Peugeot 2008, Nissan Qashqai and new Citroen C3 Aircross – of which it shares its platform with.

With prices starting at £23,495, the Frontera is one of the cheapest SUVs on sale with the option of seven-seats for the hybrid and undercuts the competition from the likes of Peugeot and Nissan.

What’s new?

(Vauxhall)

Though there’s nothing new about its name, the latest Frontera does sit on Stellantis’ ‘Smart Car’ Platform, which is also shared with Citroen’s new C3 Aircross and Fiat Grande Panda.

This new model will replace the outgoing Crossland SUV in the firm’s line-up and will sit between the smaller Mokka and larger Grandland.

Vauxhall now offers every model in its range with a choice of petrol, hybrid and electric power and the Frontera is no different.

The new car utilises Vauxhall’s signature black Vizor front end with a centrally positioned logo, while the interior design includes the firm’s Pure Panel Cockpit with two 10-inch screens.

The Frontera hybrid can also be equipped with an additional two seats for an extra £550, to make it one of the smallest and most affordable seven-seaters on the market.

What’s under the bonnet?

(Vauxhall)

The Frontera will be available with a choice of either a fully electric version or a hybrid model.

The EV variant features a 44kWh battery pack and electric motor that gives a claimed range of up to 186 miles. In terms of performance, the motor produces 114bhp, allowing the car to get from 0-60mph in 11.9 seconds and up to a top speed of 87mph. DC rapid charging of up to 100kW is standard allowing the car to go from a 20 to 80 per cent top up in 26 minutes.

Later down the line, you’ll be able to get the Frontera electric with a Long Range option, which will have a claimed range of 248 miles.

Vauxhall also offers the Frontera with a hybrid powertrain that comes with 48V technology. Available with two power outputs, it gets a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol with an electric motor that produces either 101bhp or 138bhp.

What’s it like to drive?

Small SUVs never feel that special to drive and the Frontera doesn’t differentiate in any shape or form.

Out on the road, the car is relatively refined at speeds except for a bit of tyre roar and it rides rather well over lumps and bumps on the road – making it comfortable on longer trips.

We’re driving the electric version and on a twisty road, the extra weight from its batteries can be felt through the steering with a lot of roll when coming out of the corners. Its acceleration isn’t exactly brisk for an EV and the steering is numb and lacks communication.

Another irritation is the large steering wheel obscures some of the infotainment screen, which is an issue found on its larger sibling, the Grandland. But, at least rear visibility is good thanks to the cut-out C-pillars and large rear windows.

The hybrid version feels a little more lively due to it weighing less than the electric variant and turns into corners better, making it have a slightly more characterful driving dynamics.

Overall, the Frontera doesn’t excel and is only average when it comes to its driving experience, but it will be more than acceptable enough for buyers.

How does it look?

(Vauxhall)

The Frontera features Vauxhall’s latest design language which means that it has the firm’s black Vizor front end and bright Intelli-LED headlights.

Down the side, there is a split C-pillar design and pronounced wheel arches to make the car look bolder and wider.

At the back, the rear tailgate has a curved design to it, as well as featuring model-specific lettering and split rear tail lights.

What’s it like inside?

(Vauxhall)

The dashboard design is similar to other Vauxhall models like the Grandland, and that’s a positive as everything is easy to access thanks to plenty of physical climate control buttons.

The ‘Flex strap’ is located around the front cup holders and is a handy little device that allows you to fasten and secure larger items into the storage area.

Vauxhall claims that the Frontera has a total of up to 23 litres of space inside for storage, including decent sized front door bins and a large centre armrest with a very deep cubby hole located inside.

However, as it’s a cheaper car, the materials used feel cut-price with lots of hard and scratchy plastics everywhere, and the fit and finish in certain areas are a little questionable.

In the back, there is excellent head and legroom for larger adults, due to the boxy design. But, the high floor on the electric version means that your legs rest rather high, making longer journeys less comfortable. However, in the hybrid model, the floor is lower, due to the lack of batteries, meaning the backseats are a lot more accommodating for longer trips. At least there are handy storage pockets on the back of the front seats and the rear doors open rather wide to make it a lot easier to gain access.

Our test car is the five-seater electric model and with the rear seats in place, there is a total of 460 litres of room. But, fold the back seats down – which rest almost flat – and that space jumps to 1,600 litres – which Vauxhall claims is six litres bigger than what you’ll find on the Astra Sports Tourer Electric.

What’s the spec like?

(Vauxhall)

Vauxhall will only offer the Frontera in two flavours. This is to keep prices reasonable and to make it easier for buyers to choose what best suits their lifestyle. The Frontera is also on price parity, meaning you’ll pay the same for either electric or hybrid versions.

The range kicks off at £23,495 for the Design trim and it brings a rear-view camera, rear parking sensors, cruise control, a 10-inch touchscreen, rain-sensing windscreen wipers and a 10-inch digital instrument cluster.

Move up to the GS, which starts at £25,895 and it boasts features such as LED tail lights, 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a black roof, power folding door mirrors, climate control, rear privacy glass and front parking sensors.

Verdict

The Frontera is a smart move for Vauxhall as it offers a seven-seat family SUV with hybrid power. Or, the EV version will be available with two battery options to suit a number of different buyers and is an affordable entry-point for those wanting to go down the electric route.

It may feel cheap in places and the driving experience is only average. But, its decent boot capacity and handy interior storage along with its price parity with the hybrid and electric versions means that the Frontera is a very sensible choice for young families.

UK’s road surface dressing up by 3.2 million square metres year-on-year

According to the Road Emulsion Association, road surfacing has increased in the UK by nine per cent year-on-year to 38.5 million square metres.

Britain’s notoriously pot-holed roads might finally be getting the repairs they need.

A recent report from the Road Emulsion Association found a 3.2 million square metre rise in road surface dressings year-on-year.

The Road Emulsion Association (REA) represents businesses that supply a wide range of bitumen emulsion products to prepare and protect the UK’s motorways, airfields and trunk roads.

The number of potholes is one of the biggest issues on our highways and byways. Much of the damage is caused by frost and rain attacking the surfaces of carriageways across the UK. Bitumen emulsion is applied to protect the tarmac from the elements, while the road surface dressing is a waterproof layer to protect the surface against fierce weather conditions.

In 2023, the supply of road surface dressings dropped to a 12-year low and saw just 35.3 million square metres worth of our roads receiving the treatment. However, this year, from April to September, that figure has increased to a total of 38.5 million square metres of the nation’s road network being fixed – which is a nine per cent increase year-on-year.

But, it is still off the pace compared to figures from 12 years ago when the repairs extended to 64.4 million square metres.

Kevin Maw, REA consultant and secretary, said: “This is positive news for the highways industry and road users. While we have a long way to go to get back to the volumes of bitumen emulsions used produced in the years up to 2012 to enable 60 plus million metre squared per annum of surface dressing, this shows that the trend has started to turn, which is encouraging.’’

Simon Williams, RAC’s head of policy, said: “We hope the preventative road maintenance tide has well and truly turned as last year’s surface dressing figure dipped to a 12-year low.

‘’The fact that so little surface dressing was carried out last year helps explain why drivers are so angry and frustrated with potholes, something we’ve very clearly seen in research for this year’s RAC report on motoring, with 56 per cent of drivers listing the poor state of local roads as their number-one motoring concern.”

The new Mazda CX-80 and Subaru Forester score maximum five-stars in latest Euro NCAP crash tests

Not only were there a plethora of five-stars for some of the latest new models, but there were a couple of cars that scored a four-star rating, too.

The results of the latest Euro NCAP have been revealed, showing a wave of five-star-ratings and a couple of surprising four-stars.

The Mazda CX-80 and Subaru Forester have both been awarded the maximum five-star score from Euro NCAP. The Japanese SUVs were praised for their standard safety systems and excellent performance with autonomous emergency braking as well as both cars’ passenger compartment remaining stable in a head-on collision.

Other cars to receive five-stars were Porsche’s new electric Macan, Audi’s A5 and Hyundai’s Santa Fe – when opted with the SmartSense safety pack.

The R5 and Alpine A290 fell behind on their performance in the adult occupant crash tests. (Renault)

However, the Renault 5 alongside its performance twin, the Alpine A290, both scored a four-star rating with both cars let down by their performance in the adult occupant crash tests.

Additionally, the MG ZS Hybrid also scored four-stars and was let down when it came to the ‘stiff’ front windscreen pillars. Judges also criticised the car’s lack of pedestrian protection at the rear of the vehicle.

Dr.Michiel Van Ratingen, secretary general at Euro NCAP, said: “As we close 2024 with this final set of safety ratings, these results highlight considerable progress across all vehicle classes, even as industry faces significant challenges. Despite these pressures, many manufacturers remain steadfast in their commitment to improving road safety, integrated advanced technologies, and prioritising the protection of all road users. Euro NCAP continues to support and guide these efforts, as we look forward to seeing how the industry tackles the challenges of 2025, driving innovation and raising safety standards worldwide.”

Jaguar’s new EV revealed following brand shake-up

Upcoming battery-powered showcases a bold new direction for the brand.

Jaguar’s new luxury electric car is here and arrives with a bold new look to reflect the brand’s recent image transformation.

Jaguar recently sparked widespread controversy with its dramatic re-brand which saw the firm ditch its traditional theme in favour of a more modern take. Its ‘copy nothing’ tagline drew worldwide interest, with even the boss of social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Elon Musk, responding by stating ‘do you even sell cars?’.

However, that early re-brand lacked any indication of what Jaguar’s new car would look like, which is where this new vehicle takes things forward.

The front end of the Type 00 showcases an smoothed-off design

Called the Type 00, it arrives as a ‘concept with bold forms and exuberant proportions to inspire future Jaguars’, according to the brand, and has been revealed in two colours – Miami Pink and London Blue. Jaguar’s famous ‘leaper’ logo is laser-etched into a brass ingot on each side of the car, which themselves open to reveal rear-facing cameras that provide a view for the driver similar to conventional wing mirrors via screens located in the cabin.

Access to the cabin comes through two ‘butterfly’ doors which reveal a large, spacious interior with three hand-finished brass lines which run the length of the interior. The ‘floating’ front seats are finished in a wool blend which is also used on the flooring and other areas.

The Type 00 should return up to 478 miles of range

With a number of flush surfaces and a glassless rear tailgate, it appears that the Type 00 has been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible which would, in theory, help to boost its range and overall efficiency.

Jaguar says that the new car uses a dedicated electric platform which should return up to 478 miles of range while rapid charging will add 200 miles of charge in 15 minutes.

The cabin is split by one long brass section

Adrian Mardell, chief executive office, JLR, said: “The magic of Jaguar is close to my heart – an original British luxury brand unmatched in its heritage, artistry and emotional magnetism. That’s the Jaguar we are recapturing and we will create the same sense of awe that surrounded iconic models like the E-type.

“Our journey is already underway, guided by our original ethos to Copy Nothing – and the results will be nothing short of spectacular.”

Jaguar has stated that both its cars and ‘culture’ will ‘come to life’ in a number of ‘exclusive brand stores’ with the first of these being located in the 8th arrondissement in Paris.

The production-ready version of the Type 00 – which will be made in the UK – is set to be revealed late in 2025 and though prices haven’t been confirmed, it’s expected to come in north of £100,000.

Ford adds to its EV line-up with the new Puma Gen-E

The electric version of the Puma will offer up to 325 miles of range on a single charge from a 43kWh battery pack.

Ford has taken the covers off the next chapter in its EV line-up – the new Puma Gen-E.

This new model sits on the same platform as the petrol version and looks almost identical to the standard car – with a few subtle changes.

Externally, the Gen-E now features white Ford badges to distinguish the electrified variant and there is a smoothed-off front grille, due to the lack of engine – but other than that, it’s all typical Puma meaning you still get the same rounded front headlights, lower ground clearance and squatted rear stance.

The Puma Gen-E will sit alongside the combustion model in the range. (Ford)

Powering the Gen-E is a 43kWh battery pack with an electric motor that gives out 165bhp and 290Nm of torque. The car can go from 0-60mph in 7.8 seconds and it runs out of steam at 100mph.

In terms of range, Ford claims the battery-powered Puma can do a total distance of 233 miles or 325 miles in the city and is compatible with 100kW rapid charging – taking the car from 10 to 80 per cent in just 23 minutes.

Space is where the Gen-E really exceeds the competition, with Ford introducing its ‘GigaBox’ which is a large 145-litre underfloor storage area in the boot allowing for a total capacity of 574 litres with the seats in place. The manufacturer claims it to be bigger than a Mondeo Estate. Fold the rear seats down and that space doubles to 1,283 litres. Additionally, there is an extra 43 litres of added space under the frunk.

Prices start at £29,995. (Ford)

There will be two trim levels. The standard Select model features equipment such as 17-inch alloy wheels, the ‘GigaBox’, a 12-inch central touchscreen and a rear-view camera.
